Hello People! You might not believe it, but around 7% of the worlds population is gay. That means out of every fourteen people, around one of them is gay (think about your friends!). Despite that, there is still a lot of controversy concerning the right of gay people to get married to their partners of the same sex. My argument is that people should be allowed to marry the people they love, no matter what gender or sexual orientation they are, and here’s why.
Opponents of gay marriage often say that being homosexual is a mental disorder and that people should be treated for it. This is crazy. Gay people aren’t hurting anybody, so why do some people think we need to cure them? Studies have shown that it is almost impossible to “cure” someone of being gay, and if they aren’t causing anyone harm, why should we even bother? It’s a huge waste of time. In current society, we are forcing everyone to be straight and to think the same. Gay people are too scared of what might happen to them if they came out. There are millions of stories of kids that have gotten tormented and harrassed because they are gay. If we changed this law, people wouldn’t be scared to be who they really were and express themselves. It would make the world a more comfortable environment for homosexuals. Having this law wouldn’t affect anyone except the people it was benifiting, and it would definitely make a lot more people happy than unhappy. People in this world should learn to live with people who are different to everybody else.
The most common reason why people are against gay marriage is their religious beliefs. In the modern world, everyone knows how wrong it is to discriminate against different cultures and religions, so why are we still against homosexuality? Most people assume that being gay is a choice, but really who would choose the risk of getting ridiculed everyday, over being normal. The majority of gay people say they were born that way and they can’t change. If that’s true, what makes it any different to judging people by their race? People were born with their skin a certain color just as they were born with their minds set a certain way. That means it’s just as bad to be against homosexuality as it is to be a racist. 75 years ago a black man could get killed for trying to marry a white woman, which seems insane now. I bet 75 years from now it’s going to seem just as crazy that we didn’t allow gay marriage.
There are also some people that argue that, if two men are allowed to get married, that’s no different to marrying a dog, or a child. This seems ridiculous, but some people think this is still a valid reason to be against gay marriage. The difference is that two men can consent to getting married, while a dog or a child can’t, for ethical or obvious reasons. Gay people don’t fight back against heterosexual marriage so its selfish for us not to allow gay marriage. Especially when there is no harm done to us by letting them get married. Some people think that letting gay couples get married will “dilute the institution of marriage” by belittling marriage between men and woman, but this puts emphasis on the wrong aspect of gay marriage. It is far more important that two people consent to marry than it is that they are each members of the opposite sex.
Some people say that gays need treatment; I say that whoever says that needs treatment. Just because they don’t think the same way as you doesn’t mean you should treat them any different. Some people say their religions are against it; but the bible says that touching a dead pigs skin makes you unclean. Any of you ever touch an American football? We break a lot of the rules of our religions, so why are we so fixated on this one? Some people say that a marriage should be a union exclusively between a man and a woman, but theres no reason why this shouldn’t apply to any pair of consenting adults. It is very hard to find a legitimate reason why gay couples cannot get married to the ones they love.
